Workers need face shields across a multitude of industries to ensure reliable protection from numerous hazards. Face shields are essential personal protective equipment used by workers (medical, welders, scientists) to prevent harm or burn on the face. Wearing face protection is one of the simplest ways to shields one's face from the elements faced at work. 

A face shield is personal protective equipment (PPE), aims to protect the wearer's entire face from hazards such as flying objects and road debris, chemical splashes, or potentially infectious materials. Some common industries and applications for which face shields can be worn to protect workers from potential hazards include:

Refineries: working during turnarounds involves cutting metal and paint solvents. Face shield protection is a must.

Construction: anyone exposed to impact hazards, flying Jobsite debris, or dust should consider wearing a face shield.

Metal fabrication:  individuals who work with machines and around other physical hazards including furnaces, molten metal or glass, or heat, sparks, and glare should protect their faces by wearing a face shield.

Woodworking: flying pieces of wood and wood dust are constant concerns in this industry. A face shield is required here.

Welding: welders engaged in any welding-related activity, like cutting and grinding metal, should wear face shields. Face shields provide protection from the intense heat, optical radiation, and sparks from arc-welding equipment.

Laboratory: workers who handle potentially hazardous biological materials need their faces fully covered.

Railroads: maintenance workers in service, repair, and mechanical facilities require face shields from flying projectiles.

Face injuries can have severe consequences, leaving permanent damage, so the best way to prevent this is through the use of full-face protection gear.

A face shield can also act as a constant reminder for an individual to not touch their face, eyes, and hair while working in a laboratory, refineries, construction sites, etc. This will prevent any bacteria or water droplets on their hands from reaching and contaminating their face. Face shields appear to prevent inhalation of a substantial amount of aerosol-size particles, an important piece of personal protection that cloth-based face masks have not been shown to provide thus far. For many individuals, face shields are likely to provide greater comfort than face masks. This may be important especially for claustrophobic individuals or those with respiratory medical comorbidities who have difficulty breathing.
