ESD IN INDUSTRIES

ESD CLASSES

Temperature and humidity (or the moisture content of the shoe) have an important influence on the electrical resistance of ESD safety shoes. Safety shoes with ESD protection have been tested and divided into different climate classes, 1, 2, and 3.

The difference between these three classes is conditioning time, temperature, and humidity. For example, climate class 1 is the ESD class with the highest temperature and lowest humidity. When safety shoes meet Class 1 criteria (ie electrical resistance between 0.1 and 100 MΩ), the low electrical resistance is guaranteed, even in exceptional circumstances.

Testing the ESD properties of protective footwear for ESD certification involves a laboratory test method. The safety shoe is placed on the stainless steel plate as the first electrode, and the counter electrode is placed inside the safety shoe on the insole. A weight of 12.5 kg (+/- 2.5 kg) is then applied. The device measures the contact resistance between the two electrodes. It must be less than 100 megohms for ESD certification to be awarded for the appropriate climate class.
