Follow these four basic steps using the PASS acronym:

1. **Pull (Pin):** Remove the pin at the top of the extinguisher to break the seal. Test the extinguisher away from yourself to verify functionality and observe stream range.

2. **Aim:** Stand at a safe distance and direct the nozzle or outlet towards the fire's base.

3. **Squeeze:** Squeeze the handles together to release the extinguishing agent. Release the handles to stop the discharge.

4. **Sweep:** Sweep the nozzle from side to side while approaching the fire, ensuring the extinguishing agent covers the base of the flames. After extinguishing a Class A fire, check for smoldering hot spots that could reignite the fuel.
